Eleven Chardonnay Travelers rigs gathered on June 26-29 at Marble Quarry RV Park in Columbia.
Wagon Masters Joe & Jo Macaluso, Gene and Judy Mullen provided a great Taco Salad Bar with all
the trimmings for dinner Thursday night. The next morning they fed us a hearty breakfast before our
private morning tour of Columbia State Park. The Ranger who conducted our tour was very
knowledgeable, and we learned a great deal about the history of this area during the Gold Rush era,
and particularly the difficulties this town had in obtaining the water necessary for survival with no river
nearby. No one in our group rode the stage coach or panned for gold, but it was fun to walk the
shaded main street, visit the historic displays and shops with shopkeepers garbed mid-1800’s style,
and enjoy an ice cream cone from a bench while people-watching.
Friday afternoon, and Saturday after our Chapter meeting there was time for further exploring the area
on our own. Suggested activities included antiquing and dining in nearby Sonora and Jamestown,
Mercer Caverns and Cave/Mine Adventures, Railtown State Park, and Rosemary’s Garden to name a
few. And of course, some of our ladies enjoyed the quilt store in Sonora.
Saturday evening State WIT President Dell & Judy Jackson drove up from Copperopolis to join us for a
“bring your own meat to BBQ” potluck dinner. Later that evening, the group surprised Art & Sandy
Schipper at their campsite with a decorated cake for dessert to commemorate their 50th Wedding
Anniversary. It was such a beautiful evening, we continued to sit outside visiting, while some played
the LCR game at the picnic tables (won by Susan Winn).
After our get-away breakfast, featuring homemade muffins by Jo Macaluso, we headed home, taking
with us memories of another wonderful club outing. Our group welcomes visitors and new members.
Come and join the fun!
